Veteran Care

Veteran care is a topic in mental health that has gotten more and more attention recently, as it should, because this community needs tremendous help for what service members have done or have gotten trained to do for their country. It must be understood that this is an area of mental health unto itself and must be handled in it’s own sensitive ways. Without handling veteran’s issues in sensitive ways, you’ll lose much of the attention and interest of the veteran community.

  • Understanding the terminology: “Mental injury” instead of “Mental Illness”
  • Understanding the difference between those who have served in combat and those who have not:
  • The need to be debriefed after going to war:
  • Those who have been effected by sexual assault (MST):
  • Substance abuse issues (alcohol use and opiate use):
  • Understanding the difference of having two families (those on the service members unit who were there to save their life, and those at home whom he or she has a family with)
